Issue #20 of Plebella

DICHTEN - 16 New (to American Readers) Poets

A magazine issue with poems by Ann Cotton, Franz Josef Czernin, Michael Donhauser, Ute Eisinger, Daniel Falb, Hendrik Jackson, Marget Kreidl, Bert Papenfuss, Steffen Popp, Monika Rinck, Farhad Showghi, Hans Thill, Raphael Urweider, Anja Utler, Ron Winkler, and Uljana Wolf.

Translated by Andrew Duncan, Tony Frazer, Nicholas Grindell, Christian Hawkey, Ann Cotten, Ute Eisinger, and Rosmarie Waldrop.

The poets in this magazine issue, mostly in their thirties and forties, show great formal diversity. The works range from the sound explorations of Anja Utler to the camp sonnets of Ann Cotten; from Czernin’s puns and permutations to Rinck’s and Falb’s deceptively simple parlando; from Donhauser’s grammatical disruptions to Papenfuss’s baroque lists and “sassy East tone.” But they all share a concern with form and with language as material. The poets have also all received at least one prize.

Barrett Watten on Lytle Shaw's Frank O'Hara:
"The greatest reward of Shaw’s study comes when he shows how O’Hara’s major works function as interpretive constructions of social experience, as in his chapters on the cold-war allegory of O’Hara’s use of Mayakovsky and Pasternak, on Second Avenue as criticism of abstract painting, and on O’Hara’s response to Rauschenberg’s Combines as a postfigurative mix of material and semiotic fabrication."

INCENDIARY DEVICES

Discourses of the Other

by Louis Armand

The question of signifying materiality remains an overwhelming problem in contemporary discussions of discourse and textuality. Focusing upon the work of key twentieth century thinkers, including Jacques Lacan, Martin Heidegger and Jacques Derrida, Incendiary Devices opens up new critical horizons in the dialogue between psychoanalysis, ontology and textual theory, and offers a framework for re-evaluating the status of "structure" as the basic paradigm for understanding subjectivity, meaning and the technics of literacy.

"Armand's critique of Lacan provides a post-Heideggerean thesis that remains alert to important limitations in Heidegger's thinking, limitations that have been exposed with great subtlety by Derrida … Unlike Lacoue-Labarthe and Nancy, who in their ground-breaking The Title of the Letter had concluded in the early seventies that Lacan's concepts could not make sense in a Heideggerean perspective, Armand shows that they do."
--Jean-Michel Rabaté, author of Jacques Lacan (Palgrave)
